‘Repeated offender Peralta should resign’ - AD

Greens say that Peralta’s latest gaffe is his last nail in the coffin after he had illegally built a house in Gozo and called for different sentences to foreigners.

Alternattiva Demokratika has called for the immediate resignation of Magistrate Carol Peralta, after he ordered the "abusive" arrest of a reporter who tried to take photos of Peralta's Chambers, where a Christmas party was being organised.

Coupled with his latest gaffe and previous offences, AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola said that his position has become untenable and should immediately resign.

"Peralta is a repeat offender. He illegally built a house in Gozo, he stated that foreigners should be sentenced differently from Maltese, he ordered the deportation of his previous foreign housekeeper after he had made use of her and also condoned insults against the gay community so as long as one came from Mellieha."

"Yesterday's abusive arrest of a reporter was the last nail in the coffin and Peralta should hand his resignation with immediate effect," Cassola said.

The AD Chairperson also argued that people who abuse their power are no longer fit to hold impartial posts within the judiciary.

In comments to MaltaToday, PN Deputy Leader Beppe Fenech Adami also voiced AD's calls for Peralta's resignation as he said that his position is no longer tenable.

"Not only did Peralta hosted Christmas drinks at the courts, but he was also reportedly moking and drinking. However, what is more serious is his decision to abusively order the arrest of a journalist," Fenech Adami said.
