Communists call for nationalization of public transport
‘Government should take full responsibility of public transport service’ – Communist Party
The Communist Party has suggested that the departure of Arriva from Malta should lead to the government introducing changes that will improve the belegeaured public transport service.
"It has to meet the needs of all those who make use of it. This should put pressure on the government to nationalize the service," the CPM said in a statement.
Arriva will be leaving Malta at the beginning of 2014 after registering €36 million in losses since the start of its operations. The government intends taking over the service by purchasing its vehicles.
"The social aspect of this service should be given priority. The regular commuters are pensioners, workers, students, families on low income, immigrants, and persons with disabilities and those with social and mental health problems. As well as those, who aim to reduce the use of their private car," CPM secretary Victor Degiovanni said.
The CPM also said that any changes should guarantee better working conditions for all employees in this sector.
"They are working in a stressful environment where great responsibility is required. We are glad to hear that the government will safeguard all employees' job.
"Efficiency, time schedules, and decent wages for employees, should be the main ingredients of this reform. State subsidies should remain an integral part of this reform, to make the service one that will meet the passengers' needs."
