Over 1,000 migrants rescued in 24 hours, AFM involved
Armed Forces of Malta participates in rescue mission of nine boats carrying migrants off Italian island of Lampedusa.
An Armed Forces of Malta maritime patrol aircraft spotted two boats carrying migrants outside Malta's Search and Rescue area. In the rescue operation, 823 migrants were rescued by the Italian Navy from several boats.
An AFM spokesperson told MaltaToday that the army's Hawker Beech King Air B200 participated in the rescue mission of nine boats coordinated by the Italian authorities.
This morning, the Italian navy rescued the refugees from four rickety boats in the Sicilian Channel south of Lamedusa, the stepping-stone island closer to Libya than Sicily.
The nationality of the asylum-seekers, who included 23 women and 46 minors, was not immediately known. Lampedusa is the site of repeated migrant landings and sometimes disasters.
Yesterday, the Italian navy rescued 233 asylum seekers off the coast of Lampedusa after their boat was at risk of sinking.
In October more than 300 African migrants died after their boat sank off Lampedusa while days later, hundreds of migrants died when their boat capsized.
