Update 2 | Supply restored to most localities

Power being restored as switchboard trips during maintenance works causing blackout.

One of the Delimara power station's switchboard tripped during maintenance causing a widespread power cut across the Maltese Islands, MaltaToday has learnt.

The maintenance works were being carried out by Enemalta.

During preparations for a scheduled maintenance operation, one of the power station's 132kv switchboard's tripped, causing disruption of supply from all generating units.

Enemalta is currently working on restoring electricity, which was lost at around 1:55pm. Supply has been restored to the majority of localities across Malta and Gozo, with the exception of certain parts of San Gwann and other localities in Gozo.

The corporation's electricity generation and distribution sections are currently working to gradually restore supply to all areas.

Supply to strategic locations such as hospitals was immediately reactivated.

As soon as the power cut was experienced, users took to Facebook to express their frustration... or joy.
