PN lambasts reception-in-car park decision ‘insensitive’
Nationalist MP Claudio Grech says decision to move day care waiting area in car park ‘insensitive’ and ‘undignified’.
The Opposition's spokesman for health Claudio Grech has lambasted government's decision to temporarily move the reception area of Mater Dei's day surgery unit in the car park, saying it was "insensitive" and "undignified".
A decision was taken to temporarily use the reception area as a "treatment room" as health authorities expect an influx of patients admitted to the hospital due to the influenza season.
The Prime Minister has since ordered the removal of the tent and workers were seen pulling down the tent this evening.
Grech voiced his concern over the decision which would have resulted in patients waiting outside in the cold during January and February.
"Such a decision cannot be understood. It is insensitive and undignified. Every patient who makes use of Mater Dei should be welcomed in a comfortable and civilized place and not left to wait outside under a tent," he said.
The MP said one had to keep in mind that patients would be in a vulnerable state.
"The tent symobilises government's mediocrity and its lack of ideas. Labour was elected on promises of an improved healthcare service. The government not only failed to consult with anyone on this decision, but is also insensitive and indicates the government's panic."
Grech said such panic was also mirrored in a recent decision to cancel appointments.
The PN also urged government to reverse its decision.
