MEP David Casa has held several meetings with various MEPs from different political groups and also lobbyists over the upcoming vote on the controversial citizenship scheme introduced by the Labour government.

Sources told MaltaToday that Casa also met current European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship Antonio Tajani over the matter.

This newspaper is informed that Tajani - one of the five Vice-President of the European Commission since May 2008 - is committed to the Opposition's cause and argued that EU citizenship "should not be given so easily."

As the European Parliament convenes in Strasbourg this week it is understood that Casa will hold further meetings to garner as many votes against government's proposal as possible.

MEPs will debate the controversial Maltese citizenship scheme with the Commission and Council on Wednesday afternoon and vote a resolution on Thursday.
