Labour conference to focus on Maltese identity
‘Malta: Maltese, European, Global’ to be the theme of Labour’s February conference.
The forthcoming Labour conference is set to discuss a motion entitled Malta: Maltese, European, Global, the party announced today.
In a press conference held this morning, Labour deputy leader for party affairs, Toni Abela, announced that the general conference will be held between 3 and 9 February.
He explained that the motion encapsulates the country's three key qualities including strengthening its identity, European Malta and global Malta.
"In today's globalized world, its vital for Malta to maintain its identity, while celebrating important anniversaries of events which enriched our identity."
He stressed that Malta's European identity predated Malta's accession to the EU in 2004 and underlined Malta's contribution to the bloc, culminating in the 2017 EU presidency.
Abela also underpinned Malta's global dimension, pointing out that in the past the country ignored the world beyond the EU. However, he welcomed recent developments in which Malta has engaged with countries beyond Europe.
Among the events planned for the seven-day conference, the party president Daniel Micallef and the party's executive council secretary highlighted the workshops aimed at discussing the reform of the party's local clubs and committees and a question and answer session with party leader and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to be held on 2 February.
