Alternattiva Demokratika - 'finally, the no-fly zone'
Alternativa Demokratika welcomes the decision to impose a no fly zone over Libyan territory by the UN Security Council.
Alternattiva Demokratika's spokesperson for EU and international affairs Prof. Arnold Cassola said the decision for a no-fly zone from the UNSC was very late in coming. "Hundreds of innocent civilians have died because of the indecision of the international community. Hopefully, this late decision will serve to spare the lives of other persons.”
Prof. Cassola said that in view of reports that Colonel Gaddafi relative, Yahia Ibrahim al Gaddafi, is in Malta seeking $5 million of fuel to be shipped illegally to Libya, the Maltese government must ensure that such oil provisions do not reach the Gaddafi regime.
"Any fuel which reaches the regime will only contribute to the brutal extermination of the opposition forces and innocent civilians holed up in the city of Benghazi. The government and people of Malta, who have the basic respect of fundamental human rights at heart, cannot allow to be exploited in this way.”
AD Chairperson Michael Briguglio said that “the Maltese authorities are doing well to inspect the Malta-flagged oil tanker 'Mubariz Ibrahimov' to ensure that it does not have any oil consignment destined for Libyan troops. Our country cannot afford to be used by the Gaddafi regime for its inhuman repression."
