PN MEPs welcome UN Security Council resolution
MEPs Simon Busuttil and David Casa have welcomed the UN Security Resolution empowering the international community to impose a no-fly-zone and to take all necessary measures to protect civilians under threat of attack of the Gaddafi regime.
“Last week, we supported the European Parliament resolution that boldly called for a no-fly-zone at a time when it was still taboo. Today, we are delighted that the international community has finally decided to act in order to put a stop to this senseless massacre, ”Busuttil and Casa said.
“The Libyan people want democracy. Is it too much to ask? Should they be killed for it? They should not and the international community should support them. Disregarding their pleas for help would be shameful and immoral,” they added.
On Malta’s role, Busuttil and Casa noted that the Maltese government had already spoken clearly and endorsed EU positions asking Gaddafi to leave. Moreover, Malta is already playing an admirable role in the humanitarian efforts.
Now, they said, Malta should also support the implementation of the UNSC resolution.
“The resolution is binding on all countries, including Malta. And our Constitution does not prevent us from supporting the implementation of this resolution.”they said.
Paragraph 9 of the resolution calls on all UN Member States to provide assistance, including any necessary over flight approvals
