Malta to 'examine' request by Libya to monitor ceasefire

Malta will ‘examine’ a request by Libya to monitor the ceasefire ‘within the context of the full implementation of the United Nations resoultions’.

A statement issued last night by the Maltese government says that Malta ‘took note’ of what was said in Tripoli during a press conference by Libyan deputy foreign minister Khalid Kaim, where he stated that the Libyan Government was requesting Malta, China, Turkey and Germany to monitor the ceasefire.

“The Maltese government will examine this request within the context of the full implementation of the United Nations resolutions,” the statement said.

Earlier, foreign minister Tonio Borg had denied that Malta was asked by the Libyan government to supervise and help implement the ceasefire declared this afternoon.

Speaking to MaltaToday, minister Tonio Borg referred to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s press conference yesterday when he referred to Libyan Prime Minister Mahmouyd Al-Baghdadi’s phone call.

“While the Prime Minister insisted that for the ceasefire to be credible, Tripoli must ensure the laying down all weapons and the withdrawal of all military hardware, while Baghdadi stressed that anyone could go to Libya to see the ceasefire implemented.”

"While the Prime Minister insisted that for the ceasefire to be credible" - come on PM - are you so naive to believe Ghaddafi? Stop this beaurocratic nonsense and let the UN destroy his armaments. Most of today's politicians seem to take a course in stupidity and many obtain the PhD of it also.

It's best to let the UN take action and then negotiate with Ghaddafi after he's bombed and hopefully killed.

By contrast, Mr Kusa appeared downbeat, presenting the regime's proposals as an act of reluctant compliance with United Nations demands and insisting Libya was as determined as the United Nations to avoid civilian casualties. Mr Ibrahim also insisted on the sincerity of the government response by saying it was calling on Turkey and Malta – members of Nato and the EU respectively – to send observers to oversee the ceasefire. He also called on the United Nations to appoint an intermediary with whom details of the ceasefire could be negotiated. "We haven't found a partner to negotiate with," he said. **************** yes deny everything until the info comes out allready by other countries .
