Malta to 'examine' request by Libya to monitor ceasefire
Malta will ‘examine’ a request by Libya to monitor the ceasefire ‘within the context of the full implementation of the United Nations resoultions’.
A statement issued last night by the Maltese government says that Malta ‘took note’ of what was said in Tripoli during a press conference by Libyan deputy foreign minister Khalid Kaim, where he stated that the Libyan Government was requesting Malta, China, Turkey and Germany to monitor the ceasefire.
“The Maltese government will examine this request within the context of the full implementation of the United Nations resolutions,” the statement said.
Earlier, foreign minister Tonio Borg had denied that Malta was asked by the Libyan government to supervise and help implement the ceasefire declared this afternoon.
Speaking to MaltaToday, minister Tonio Borg referred to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s press conference yesterday when he referred to Libyan Prime Minister Mahmouyd Al-Baghdadi’s phone call.
“While the Prime Minister insisted that for the ceasefire to be credible, Tripoli must ensure the laying down all weapons and the withdrawal of all military hardware, while Baghdadi stressed that anyone could go to Libya to see the ceasefire implemented.”
