Updated | Enemalta industrial action ‘disproportionate to the issue’ – MEA

The Malta Employers’ Association has called for an immediate end to the industrial actions at Enemalta, claiming the disruption was disproportionate to the issue.

Adds General Workers' Union statement

In a reply to the MEA’s statement, the GWU said it could not understand how the Association has called onto the Union to stop the industrial action, whilst it did not ask Enemalta to stop discriminating against the Union's workers.

“MEA should have supported the Union’s call for an independent body to investigate the claims, which call was refused by Enemalta,” GWU said.

The Union added that had Enemalta accepted the call, the GWU would have immediately ceased the industrial action.

Following claims of discrimination and victimisation by Enemalta management targeting General Workers’ Union members, the GWU had declared an industrial dispute with Enemalta.

In a statement, MEA said now that the dispute has been taken to the Industrial Tribunal, “there is no point in disrupting the operations of Enemalta at this stage.”

The Association said that the actions are having a negative impact on third parties who are not involved in the dispute. “The suspension of pending applications for services for commercial entities is affecting many businesses and job creation,” it said.

MEA added the disruption caused by these actions are “disproportionate to the issue that has instigated the General Workers’ Union to take industrial action.”
