Labour proposes Family Affairs Committee

Labour has presented a motion for the setting up of a Permanent Committee for Family Affairs.

The motion was presented this morning to the Clerk of the House by Labour MPs Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Carmelo Abela and Justyne Caruana.

The motion was approved by the PL's parliamentary group which also seconded the motion.

In their motion, the MPs noted that from the recent debate on family and marriage which has dominated the national agenda over the past weeks, it clearly emerged that there existed an unprecedented consensus on the love of Maltese and Gozitans for the family and all it represented.

It was clear, however - the MPs said - that families were facing a number of challenges and difficulties which they could not always overcome.

“It would be a pity that following such a discussion, which placed the family on top of the national agenda, the opportunity to act to ensure a better future for Maltese families was lost,” they said.

The MPs stressed on the importance to ensure that children and youngsters grew up and lived within a family unit which helped them grow up with responsibility and commitment.

They proposed the setting up of the committee, which, they proposed, should be tasked with going through all existing legislation to evaluate it and carry out a socio-economic impact study of these laws with the help of the country's entities and institutions.

The committee, they said, should closely follow the work of the National Family Commission, which shoudl be set up on a permanent pasis, the Family Institute at the University and the Children's Commissioner.

While one can say that this is one step foward in consolidating the family, unless married couples have : 1. Decent wages 2. Affordable housing 3. Controlled cost of living which in the end would result in them not needing to take up second part time jobs and can be together more of the time then we'll be heading in the right direction. Consummerism is the main culprit in marriage break ups and if this is not restrained then it is useless to set up committees that are only good as a get toghether of people who have nothing better to do. Sorry for the double entry.

Are we to assume that the once much talked about "vagina wardens", once proposed by the Social Affairs Committee, to find their way here ? Might apply to work part-time as such, seeing that I am past retirement !!

A concession from Muscat's part, if you asked me. Nothing really comes out from these committee but lots of talk about reinforcing the family unit without actualyl doing anything. The only thing that usually comes out are repressive policies in the name of family unit.
