‘Minister received €163,056 annually in commissions' - Alfred Sant

Former Labour leader Alfred Sant said a Nationalist minister used to receive €163,056 (Lm 70,000) annually in commissions over a maintenance contract of a government’s plant.

Labour organ Kulhadd reports an intervention made by former Labour leader Alfred Sant during a debate last Monday in Parliament, on the amendments to the draft law on the Permanent Commission against Corruption.

According to the newspaper, Sant said a Nationalist minister used to receive Lm70,000 each year for a maintenance contract. The maintenance used to be carried out on a government-owned plant.

Sant also mentioned four other cases of corruption “which happened under the Nationalist government”.

Without mentioning names, the paper reports Sant saying government had asked a foreign company, which had won a local tender, if it was ready to contribute financially to the Nationalist Party for receiving the tender.

Sant also referred to the controversial Fairmount shipbuilding contract. Last year, the General Workers’ Union said the contractor was mysteriously paid in advance and later disappeared.

@Capricorn Very well said. The truth is the truth. Corruption, you have heard nothing, as yet. GOD only knows what the Maltese people will be hearing, when the time comes. Only 93 weeks left. Dr. Alfred Sant was always right on what he said about such things that we will be facing. Unfortunately, the people did not understand him. Now he has proven right.

It is important for Dr. Sant to not only state these facts publicly, but also to provide the necessary documentation to the authorities so that criminal procedures are started, to weed out the culprits. This network of corruption has been eating us from the inside out for too long. However if this documentation is not provided, then it will be shrugged off in a similar manner to the BWSC case, as just hearsay. Dr. Sant must take the next step so that justice takes its due course.

A veritable Alfred Sant come-back. You can bet he'll be telling us more about it. From where I am I can already hear the Witch's bone shaking. And ... and the Skunk is exuding even more bad smell. Run and hide, you ugly things. By election time we'll know much more about the corruption cases that are still under wraps. Then it will be sauve qui peut. Maybe this is one of the main reasons why Minister Gatt has announced his intention to quit so early even earlier than Zapatero declared his plans for the future.
