‘Minister received €163,056 annually in commissions' - Alfred Sant
Former Labour leader Alfred Sant said a Nationalist minister used to receive €163,056 (Lm 70,000) annually in commissions over a maintenance contract of a government’s plant.
Labour organ Kulhadd reports an intervention made by former Labour leader Alfred Sant during a debate last Monday in Parliament, on the amendments to the draft law on the Permanent Commission against Corruption.
According to the newspaper, Sant said a Nationalist minister used to receive Lm70,000 each year for a maintenance contract. The maintenance used to be carried out on a government-owned plant.
Sant also mentioned four other cases of corruption “which happened under the Nationalist government”.
Without mentioning names, the paper reports Sant saying government had asked a foreign company, which had won a local tender, if it was ready to contribute financially to the Nationalist Party for receiving the tender.
Sant also referred to the controversial Fairmount shipbuilding contract. Last year, the General Workers’ Union said the contractor was mysteriously paid in advance and later disappeared.
