Eight pregnant inmates in four years

Fondazzjoni Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl, which works mostly amongst prison inmates and their families, has expressed its concerns over the lack of availability of a doctor round the clock at the Corradino Correctional Facility.

Speaking to sister newspaper Illum, the foundation said not having a doctor 24 hours a day is extremely risky, especially at a place which hosts over 400 persons.

When one considers this number, and considers that the facility might hold pregnant inmates, it is easier to understand the foundation’s concern.

Information provided by the Ministry of Justice reveals that between 2006 and 2010 there were eight pregnant inmates at Corradino’s facility. However, the Ministry was not in a position to reveal whether the women were pregnant before they were sent to prison, or got pregnant whilst they were at the facility.
