Smoke at Victoria Hotel, guests evacuated

Guests staying on the seventh floor at the Victoria Hotel were evacuated due to smoke coming from an overheated dehumidifier unit, but were returned safely to their rooms within an hour.

Smoke noticed on the seventh floor of the Victoria Hotel in Sliema early this morning led to the evacuation of guests from their rooms. Members of the Civil Protection Department on scene cleared the situation and ensured the place was safe.

The smoke was first noticed at around 5am, at which the hotel’s staff alerted the CPD. Three fire engines were sent. A spokesperson for the hotel said the smoke resulted from a dehumidifier in the indoor pool area which had overheated.

"The dehumidifier unit which was switched on in the indoor swimming pool overheated and caused the fumes which triggered the Hotel Alarm System,” the spokesperson said whilst stating there was no fire at the hotel.

The smoke was contained within the Indoor swimming pool area and all necessary precautions were taken to ensure maximum safety for the Hotel’s guests.

“No one was injured and guests were able to return safely to their rooms within one hour,” the spokesperson added.
