Man jailed for 29 years for drug murder

A criminal court has handed down a 29 year jail term to be served by 40 year-old Joseph Azzopardi, known as ‘Iz-Ziki Zokk’ after he was found guilty by a jury for the murder of Therese Agius, whose body was found dumped at sea in 1999.

Azzopardi was sentenced this morning by Judge Lawrence Quintano after a jury last night returned an 8-1 verdict at the end of a two week-long trial.

A commotion ensued as the jury foreman read out the verdict.

Azzopardi stood up and shouted abuse at the jurors, insisting on his innocence “What have you done to me?” annding that his conscience was clear, “I swear to God I’m not guilty!” .

The jurors were let out of the courtroom as Azzopardi continued to shout at them, stressing that they would all be “condemned”, just like he had been, for what they had done to him.

Lawyer Malcolm Mifsud appeared for Azzopardi.
