San Gwann council asks to be put under investigation, but govt insists there is no need

The Director of Local Government Martin Bugelli has declined a request made by the PN led San Gwann local council to be placed under investigation in the wake of allegations raised by fellow councilors.

Contacted by MaltaToday, Martin Bugelli said that the department constantly monitors the workings of all local councils, however the department has not been aware of any spending irregularities, "so at the time being there is no reason why the same department should initiate any investigation."

MaltaToday is informed that a series of allegations were raised during the council meeting that was held yesterday in San Gwann, where councillors from the PN and PL raised doubts on the performance on PN Mayor John Agius and Deputy Mayor Etienne Bonello Dupuis, and the executive secretary Adrian Mifsud.

The meeting resolved with Mayor Agius and Deputy Mayor Bonello Dupuis informing the council that they had no problem in asking the Department of Local Government to investigate the allegations, which in their opinion were "frivolous and unfounded".

Sources close to the council explained that PN and PL activists in the locality have been raising objections to the way the PN Mayor and Deputy Mayor were working closely with the executive secretary Adrian Mifsud.
