OPM email blunder reveals MSF evacuation charter to Misurata
UPDATE 2 | An email sent out by Malta’s defence matters director to senior government officials, was inadvertently sent out to this paper, revealing Medcines Sans Frontieres humanitarian aid charter from Malta to Misurata and Tobruk in Libya.
The email, signed by Vanessa Frazier, the director of defence matters at the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed how coalition forces were alerted by Malta to to “provide protection” for Malta-flagged Virtu’ Ferries catamaran ‘MV San Pawl’ that carried out out a voyage to war-torn Misurata in Libya.
The catamaran has been chartered by Medcines Sans Frontieres and has transported tonnes of humanitarian aid to Misurata, and has taken a number of Libyan civilian evacuees and landed them this morning in Zarzis, Tunisia.
Many injured have been transported on board the MV San Pawl and are being transferred at this time to hospitals in Tunisia for further treatment.
The email sent by Vanessa Frazier was sent to AFM’s senior officer Harold Stivala, Civil Protection director Patrick Murgo and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Edgar Galea Curmi.
Sources in Zarzis have told MaltaToday that the MV San Pawl did not berth inside the harbour, and the port authorities have been using a boat owned by Hannibal Gaddafi called the 'Aline 1' for transboarding the evacuees and injured to shore.
