Maltese bread 4% lighter in weight

An exercise carried out by sister newspaper Illum reveals the weight of the Maltese loaf has decreased by 21 grams when compared to the size of the Maltese loaf at a time when the market was regulated by the state.

Following the purchase of seven loaves of bread from seven different localities, Illum found out that the average weight of the bread was of 519 grams, 21 grams less than the 540 grams stipulated by government back then when the  market was regulated.

Bakers’ Cooperative’s president Raymond Briffa said that since the liberalisation of the bread market in 2009, bakers are free to choose the weight and the price of their bread.

Godwin Mangion, Director of the Consumer and Competition Division, said that it’s up to the baker to decide how to sell the bread. “However, the price must reflect the bread’s real weight,” Mangion said.
