Hotels in Malta accept bookings from 16-year-olds
Whilst in Europe one has to be 18 years of age to book a hotel room, and in the US 21 years old, Malta is the exception: a 16-year-old can freely book a room in certain hotels.
An exercise carried out by sister newspaper Illum shows that a number of hotels would gladly accept a booking from a 16-year-old, as long as “they pay” and “do not make noise”.
One hotel in particular said it had no problem in accepting a booking from a 15 and a 16-year-old, "as long as they are of the same sex".
GRTU’s tourism trade sector president Philip Fenech explained that when one is booking a hotel room, he or she is “making a contractual agreement”. He explained that a contractual agreement is only binding when the person has reached the age of consent.
