One dead, five migrants missing from Safi barracks
Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici has ordered an independent inquiry into the death of a Nigerian migrant following his escape from the Detention Centre in Safi with other six migrants.
In its statement, the Justice Ministry said two of the migrants were found by members of the Detention Service and were taken back to the barracks in Safi. One of them was later found unconscious and taken to Mater Dei hospital where he later died at 12.30am.
The Ministry clarified that the escapees did not form part of the asylum seekers who recently escaped the war in Libya and arrived to Malta. The escaped migrants were waiting to be repatriated.
Meanwhile, Police are still searching for the other five escaped migrants.
A magisterial inquiry is underway and Police have been called in to investigate the case.
The Justice Ministry itself has also organised an independent inquiry.
