Martin Scicluna to head ministerial inquiry over migrant’s death
Government’s former adviser on defence matters Martin Scicluna to head Justice Ministry’s inquiry of migrant’s death.
Following the escape of seven migrants from the Safi barracks on Saturday and the death of one of them, Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici has opened an independent inquiry.
The board of inquiry will be led by Martin Scicluna. Other members include Mary Anne Agius, chairperson of the board of visitors for detainees and Natalino Attard, a Grade 4 official within the Justice Ministry.
The board will delve into how the migrants escaped and what caused the Nigerian’s death. The inquiry will also investigate whether there had been negligence, non-observance of procedures or abuse of authority from any officials of the Detention Service or other officials involved in the incident.
The board will also look into ancillary aspects and make further recommendations according to their conclusions.
The Ministry expects the board to complete its work in the shortest time possible.
