UHM leaders relinquish their posts
Union Haddiema Maqghudin (UHM) President Gejtu Tanti and secretary general Gejtu Vella have relinquished their posts at the helm of Malta’s second largest trade union.
Gejtu Tanti and Gejtu Vella left their offices yesterday for the last time after 13 years, amid applause from UHM staff and members.
As the union will this week convene its national conference to formally elect its new officials, that will see Josef Borg uncontested for the post of secretary general, Jesmond Bonello is set to take up the post of UHM president.
During the national conference, the UHM is to publish a document prepared by a number of experts, including Joseph FX Zahra and Professor Peter Serracino Inglott, aimed at boosting the social dimension to government’s vision for 2015.
The document also proposes a series of changes to the Constitution, calling for more autonomy to the national parliament and for the Prime Minister to be able to nominate ministers from outside the political sphere.
In a recent interview with MaltaToday, outgoing UHM secretary general said that he will not occupy any posts at least until December.
He denied being approached to contest the forthcoming general elections in 2013, however he did not exclude his interest in entering politics in the future.
