UPDATED: Opposition leader asks Speaker to investigate allegations of hacked email correspondence

Labour leader says private correspondence with RTK journalist was hacked and used by PN media journalist.  NET TV head publishes email correspondence and insists that he received the email legally, accuses PL leader of manipulating journalists

Opposition leader Joseph Muscat has asked the Speaker to investigate the leak of private correspondence between him and a journalist employed with Church radio RTK, claiming the Nationalist media are in possession of a long-term exchange of emails.

Muscat said this was an illegal act of hacking and theft of information, that was now in the possession of PN media.

“I am asking you to investigate the actions of the Prime Minsiter’s party, and the decimation of democracy and liberty in our country,” Muscat said.

“There is a parallel secret service investigating the media in a bid to blackmail them. Nobody is going to scare us or stop us from

According to the Labour leader, Muscat was in long-term correspondence with RTK journalist Sabrina Agius over various subjects, namely alleged irregularities in government departments like the Malta IT Agency, suggestions for PQs, injustice she faced on her workplace, her criticism of the Labour media, and a discussion over her journalistic career.

Muscat said he suggested he encouraged her to apply for jobs with the Public Broadcasting Services and Allied Newspapers.

“The spin from people close to the Prime Minister was that I was seeking to place her into this employment. I never entered into the engagement of termination of employment of this person, but the assertion that I have influence on the Times or PBS is laughable.

“After having failed to spin this allegation by getting the independent media to carry it, a PN journalist asked me today whether I was seeking placements for people in the media,” Muscat said.

He said the PN media was in possession of this correspondence through an illegal hacking, and listed various examples in which suspicions of hacking of government emails were raised.

Deputy prime minister Tonio Borg intervened with a denial of the allegations. “We have nothing to hide and we have no objection to this investigation.”

Sabrina Agius, the former acting editor of Church radio RTK, is currently pursuing an industrial relations claim against her employers, over unfair and discriminatory treatment during a selection process to be appointed editor.

Sabrina Agius responded to an internal call for applications for editor of RTK and Gensillum online but was not picked for the role. The position was later advertised in an external call for applications, leading to the engagement of former Net News journalist Josianne Camilleri as the new head of news.

Agius served as acting head of news throughout the year after the departure of Leonard Callus. In her protest, she claimed she was subjected to discriminatory treatment throughout the selection process, and other incidents of bullying, intimidation and harassment from her superiors “intended to make her resign”.

Agius, who is currently still in active employment with RTK, said she resisted these attempts to make her resign.

“It clearly emerged that the company acted differently with Agius over what it considered was her political opinion, and her affiliation in a trade union,” General Workers Union lawyer Aron Mifsud Bonnici wrote in the protest.

Late last night Head of news Nathaniel Attard published the whole list of emails between Sabrina Agius and Joseph Muscat.  Mr Attard insists that he obtained the emails in a legal manner.  He called on Dr Muscat to publish the list of emails and correspondence between him and Sabrina Agius.

Reacting to this statement, the PL said that the publication of these emails was further proof that hacking had indeed taken place.  The PL accused what it called the party of Gonzi of spying, stealing information and hacking.

Its OK for RTK to be full of die hard Nationalists; for Labourites, who comprise at least half the Catholics in Malta, RTK is out of bounds!

Panto1 This is because the ever pure Nationalist Party lead by the dear leader Lawrence Gonzi has purified it's self so much that it has become immune to any criticism. This was cleverly done by planting their journalist thugs in all the "INDEPENDENT" media including the CHURCH media in this country to help them depict themselves as above any mistake or misconduct an whilst they are in government they blame every wrong doing in this country on the Labour Party. As long as the people in this country remain simple minded as they are these people will continue to thrive.

It's funny how the PN and other bloggists are accusing Joseph Muscat of 'planting', when the head of news at RTK is an ex-Medialink journalist. How come noone is mentioning the way these emails came to be in medialink's hands? They are saying it is legal. But i don't understand how someone's private emails are leaked and it is said that they have been acquired legally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Janet Xuereb I agree with you but that could only be done if we had a decent police force because our police force has lost all it's respect. The PN planted their journalist thugs everywhere including the RTK or Radju tal-Knisja news room. No wonder the church in Malta has lost the respect of the majority.

@ my friend david_lexicon Let's call a spade a spade. Considering this case, the case where a university student was bullied in the presence of Austin Gatt at the university. Austin Gatt's repeated statements that they will stay in power for the next 20 years. Joseph's Muscat allegations on hacking. Dr Michael's Falzon allegations of hacking Evarist's Bartolo and Jeffrey Pullucino Orlando's allegation of hacking during the divorce campaign. The hacking of Alfred Sant's e-mails The manipulation of TVM Cyrus Engerer police experience etc etc We are not living under GonziPN but in Gonzistan. Gonzistan. Gonzistan. We must resist Gonzistan to get our freedom back.

What happenned to Claudio's Grech resignation. Sur Muscat, they have been spying on you from before the last election. All your emails private and public are on a watch list. Sorry - but your party is full of dumb wits, you have been tipped off about hacking time and time again but had no clue what was being said!

GonziPN are double faced people. They throw a bomb and hide their hand. GonziPN know that within a year they will be in the Opposition and are doing their utmost to 'steal' again the election. But not this time.

Lest anyone suspect there was some typo in my previous post, I did mean the PN. If the PN spinners are alleging that Joseph Muscat is attempting to place people in the media ("The spin from people close to the Prime Minister was that I was seeking to place her into this employment.") you can rest assured they are doing it themselves.

From my long experience of the PN, when they accuse their adversaries of doing something it is because they are doing it themselves. It has happened so often it's no longer even funny!

They never stop do they? Always UNDERCOVER! That is how they retain power , how they balckmail their own people from not leaving the party, ..even using thier familily members and the police to delay investigations ..till the time is ripe! http://archive.maltatoday.com.mt/2008/10/12/t1.html
