Police recall catamaran after leaving port and find absconding migrant aboard

A Sicily bound catamaran was recalled into the Grand Harbour half an hour after leaving quay to search the vessel and arrest a migrant, who evaded passport control in a bid to abscond from Malta.

The incident happened early yesterday morning, when the immigration police sought the assistance of Virtu’ Ferries representatives to recall the catamaran to port to search the vessel.

During their search, 28 year old Toure Nuha of Mali, was found hiding inside the cabin of a Maltese driven trailer truck.

The migrant and the truck driver – identified as 27 year-old Simon Haber of St Paul’s Bay – were both arrested and interrogated by police.

They were both separately arraigned in Court this morning.

Toure Nuha admitted to the charges of voluntarily attempting to abscond from Malta, while failing to present travel documents and was jailed for six months.

Simon Haber however, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to charges on trafficking in people and conspiring with foreigners to carry out a crime.

Police inspectors Edel Mary Camilleri and Mario Haber informed the court that during investigations, it emerged that the Toure Nuha had to pay Simon Haber €1,300 euros on arrival in Sicily.

But the plan failed after the police received information about what was going on and recalled the Catamaran to port.

[Simon Haber however, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to charges on trafficking in people and conspiring with foreigners to carry out a crime.] Isn't this what those who ferry them from Libya are doing? Trafficking in people?? The NGOs and the JRS and the EU/UN should be presuuring Libya to go after them.
