First divorce in Maltese history granted today

The first divorce in Malta was granted today by the Family Court after necessary conditions for marriage dissolution were considered satisfactory by Madame Justice Abigail Lofaro.

The newly divorced couple, left unnamed in the online publication of the final judgment, had been living apart for 21 years since the date of their legal separation and testified that there was no reasonable prospect for reconciliation.

Madame Justice Abigail Lofaro considered the 21 year long separation adequate reason for the divorce to be approved.

Child maintenance was not applicable in the situation since the couple’s children were now adults and the woman’s request to revert back to her maiden name was granted by Lofaro.

The Maltese Courts approved the joint request and pronounced the dissolution of the marriage. The Court Registrar was ordered to notify the Director of the Public Registry of the divorce within one month for it to be registered in the Public Registry.
