Cocaine, ecstacy remain the most consumed illegal drugs in Malta
'One can go and purchase ecstasy as if he’s going to buy a drink,' an expert tells Illum about current drug accessibility in Malta.
Stimulant drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and mephedrone are the most preferred drugs in Malta, Sunday newspaper Illum reports. This is in line with European trend.
Mariella Dimech, a psychologist who worked in this field for several years, told the newspaper that it was increasingly worrying that drugs have become much more accessible and affordable.
“What is worrying is that drug abuse especially on weekends have become the norm. One may go and purchase ecstasy as if he’s going to buy a drink.”
The psychologist said that youths who are not supervised adequately are at the greatest risk of touching drugs.
“In my experience, youths run a great risk of touching drugs when the parents are completely oblivious of their child’s surroundings and friends. Likewise, those youths who have too much money in their hands and those who do not have any specific goals in their life are also prone to succumb to the drug temptation.”
Asked whether drug abuse had become more prevalent among youths, Dimech answered in the affirmative and cited the accessibility of drugs as the main cause.
