1,026 applications for divorce since 2011

Over 300 applications for divorce presented every year since introduction of law

A total of 1,026 applications for divorce were presented to the Maltese courts since the divorce law came into force in 2011.

The information, presented in parliament in reply to a question from Nationalist MP Carm Mifsud Bonnici, saw 222 applications for divorce by legally separated couples in 2011, doubling to 442 in 2012, and falling to 339 in 2013.

868 of these cases have been decided. 37 cases for divorce were presented in the Gozitan courts, one of which was from a couple that was still married. The rest were from spouses undergoing separation proceedings. 31 divorce cases were decided.

It's too early to confirm a meaningful trend for divorce proceedings as several of those filing for divorce would have done so ages ago if divorce was available prior to 2011.Such aspect may easily inflate data.
