Labour MEP urges more action in fight against cancer
The European Parliament must continue to promote research on cancer, says Labour MEP Abela Baldacchino.
Labour MEP Claudette Abela Baldacchino today reiterated her call for the European Parliament to continue its fight against illnesses such as cancer.
Speaking at a European Parliament conference themed 'European action against Cancer', Abela Baldacchino declared her intention to push for more work and research to be carried out on areas such as prostate cancer.
She also urged future MEPs to be vocal in the fight against cancer. This could be done, she said, with more participation in European groups such as 'MEPs Against Cancer'.
Also addressing the conference was European Commissioner for Health Tonio Borg.
Borg outlined various initiatives which the European Commission was working on in the field, such as examining ways to improve the work of the European Union Expert Group on Cancer, as well ratifying the European Code Against Cancer.
Former parliamentary deputy and cancer specialist Anthony Zammit, chairperson of Puttinu Cares Victor Calvagna, , Esther Sant of 'Action for Breast Cancer Foundation' and Martina Fenech, a 17-year-old cancer survivor also spoke at the conference.
