Maltese man allegedly beaten up in Egypt
According to the newspaper Torċa, a Maltese man suffered several injuries after been beaten up in Egypt. Reasons for this attack are not known.
The man, who was on his way to Malta from China, had to stop in Cairo, Egypt, to catch the plane to Malta. For reasons not yet known, in Cairo the man was allegedly attacked and robbed of his passport and personal belongings, amongst them money.
Because of this incident, the Maltese lost his flight which was supposed to bring him back last Tuesday.
It transpired that the man’s physical conditions were so critical that his relatives had to go to Cairo and bring him back to Malta themselves. The man was immediately transferred to the Emergency unit at Mater Dei.
According to the newspaper, the man did not contact the Maltese Embassy in Egypt but phoned directly his relatives. According to the Egyptian authorities the man did not want to come back to Malta and as soon as his relatives were informed they immediately flew to Kair and made all the necessary arrangements to bring him back and given the necessary care here in Malta.
The man arrived in Malta on Thursday and is still being cared after at the hospital. Torċa also reported that even though it is not known whether the Maltese authorities are aware of the case, Interpol had been informed.
