Government approves more free medicines for cancer patients

11 new medicines were intruduced this year, which are being distributed at no cost to patients who suffer from different conditions. The majority of the approved medicines are for cancer patients and it is the first time that they have been made available in Malta.

The new medicine has been approved by the Government Formulary List Advisory Committee and includes medicines which are to fight different forms of cancer. These can be found on the Government Formulary List.

13 other types of medicine which were given to patients according to the Exceptional Medicinal Treatment Policy have now also been formally introduced to the same list.

The total amount of 1,316 different medicines which are on the formulary list can be found in hospitals and pharmacies.

The list includes Herceptin,Temozolomide (for brain tumor), Erlotinib (lung cancer), Pemetrexed (lung cancer), Lenalidomide (leukaemia and multiple myeloma and other blood cancer), Bortezomib (blood cancer), Sunitinib and others (kidney and stomach cancer) , Docetaxel  (prostate cancer), and Apprepitant (to mitigate cancer treatment side-effects).
