PN calls on government to ‘stop ignoring’ economic performance statistics

Nationalist Party says government should implement economic strategy to offset “worrying” NSO statistics

The Nationalist Party has called on the government to "stop ignoring" recent NSO statistics on the country's economic performance and to implement a roadmap to offset these "worrying" economic signals.

"The Nationalist Party has repeatedly voiced its concern on the increase in unemployment and drops in retail trade, industrial production, imports and exports," it said.

While insisting that Malta's economic performance is still stronger when compared with competing countries, it nevertheless said recent statistics published by the National Statistics Office are "a sign of worry".

The PN explained that a yearly 9% or €700 million drop in imports means reduced consumption power by families as well as lower purchases of raw materials by industry.

"Exports decreased by 13%, or €600 million. When one eliminated re-exports of fuels and petroleum products, exports still suffered a 7.5% loss."

"In light of the statistics, the PN has consequently renewed its call to the government to implement a strategy and economic vision before it is too late - a feat which would ultimately be detrimental to Maltese and Gozitan families."

Many economic operators like me can vouch that local consumption has been going down for 5 years! The greatest fall happened when Gonzi and his special delegate Simon Busutill hammered down on all of us the famous' nivvota bil-qalb biex joghlew l-kontijiet tad-dawl' whilst, at the same time, u bla misthija, Gonzi and Simon took 500 euros a week behind our back, and when all the blue eyed bloggers, consultants and hangers on, were having a hayday with the thousands of euros per week given to them for services rendered for the PN party machine. It is only now that the downward trend and curve for consumption has flattened out, Today, we are seeing the graph for consumption going slowly upwards; notwithstanding the negativism and the spokes in the wheels by Simon and Co!

Come on, all these PNers know these figures turn one way or another due to Oil Bunkering activity and also local Oil purchases which are periodic and not consistent on a month to month basis. Big figures indeed (remember the huge oil scandal!!!!) Oil activity needs to be reported separately as well as with the rest of the figures. That should produce a better analysis of the situation.

What the PM can never ignore is the 6 billion of debt that you lot have left behind for our children! Kif ma jisthux jitkellmu? Semmew l-actavis meta din inxtrat minn Watson u iddecidiet li taghlaq part mill-operatt taghha f'ottubru tal 2012?

I am a student of economics...so please Gonzi-Simon pn, stop mouthing rubbish, as the people are fed up hearing nonentities such as the ex finance minister, as you still think that people are stupid, and believe all you say....it is going to take a lot of time for you to be credible....a lot and lot of time especially with such a leader, as simple simon

The PM? Telling the Government to stop ignoring economic performance statistics? When for their last 25 years left behind a corrupted scandalous country with a massive €6.000.000.000. debt? Investigations being taking place and new cases of corruptionn being exposed daily? How brilliant the PN had been since it earned its deserved wipe out,how imaginative.

A drop in imports does not necessarily imply lower consumption by Maltese people but perhaps better use of their money by buying more for less. It could also mean cheaper raw material imports since overseas companieed lowered their prices due to the precarious international situation in order to continue selling instead of closing down. Apart from this, the economy could be compared to a balloon. You can inflate it and continue to inflate it and it grows bigger and bigger but it will reach a stage where finally it bursts. This is what is happening because economists think that the economy could go on expanding forever but things do not work like that in practice. Experience and history shows that they work more like the balloon example than the Utopia postulated by the economists.

These Nationalist MPs are a boring lot. They have became our nation's laughing stock. Always hair splitting, no substance - how pathetic!
