PN calls on government to ‘stop ignoring’ economic performance statistics
Nationalist Party says government should implement economic strategy to offset “worrying” NSO statistics
The Nationalist Party has called on the government to "stop ignoring" recent NSO statistics on the country's economic performance and to implement a roadmap to offset these "worrying" economic signals.
"The Nationalist Party has repeatedly voiced its concern on the increase in unemployment and drops in retail trade, industrial production, imports and exports," it said.
While insisting that Malta's economic performance is still stronger when compared with competing countries, it nevertheless said recent statistics published by the National Statistics Office are "a sign of worry".
The PN explained that a yearly 9% or €700 million drop in imports means reduced consumption power by families as well as lower purchases of raw materials by industry.
"Exports decreased by 13%, or €600 million. When one eliminated re-exports of fuels and petroleum products, exports still suffered a 7.5% loss."
"In light of the statistics, the PN has consequently renewed its call to the government to implement a strategy and economic vision before it is too late - a feat which would ultimately be detrimental to Maltese and Gozitan families."
