EP approves illicit drugs report
The illicit drugs report was Marlene Mizzi’s fourth report since her election as an MEP in May 2013.
The Environment and Public Health committee in the European Parliament approved with an overwhelming majority an opinion on the illicit drugs directive, on which Maltese MEP Marlene Mizzi served as the main S&D spokesperson.
This was Mizzi’s fourth report since her election as an MEP in May 2013.
Marlene Mizzi expressed her satisfaction at the positive result, saying there was widespread consensus across all political groups that such directive needed to be updated.
“The problem of drugs is something that concerns all of us. Through this report, we are once again ensuring that our society is safeguarded in the best possible way. This report proves that Malta, despite its small size can indeed play an important role in shaping the future of Europe,” Marlene Mizzi said.
The illicit drugs directive updates the previous directive adopted in 2004, which set out to approximate the definition of criminal offences and sanctions related to illicit drug trafficking.
The report ensures that more people are protected and that governments have the necessary tools to combat such problems.
