Heavy rain, wind cause havoc around Malta

Uprooted trees, flooding and collapsed walls reported as police warn drivers to exercise extreme caution

Showers, stormy weather and flooding have caused significant damage across Malta.

Several reports of flooding and uprooted trees have been reported while police and members of the Civil Protection Department have been on constant call in assisting motorists and repairing damages.

A slow-moving low-pressure system passing over the Maltese Islands during the weekend has produced heavy rain, while thundery weather and possibly hail are also expected.

Flooding in low-lying roads has caused several traffic delays while pools of rainwater accumulated in Msida, Balzan, Birkirkara and Qawra.

Several walls have collapsed while an electricty pole collapsed in Attard. Billboards and trees also succumbed to the wind.

A fallen tree blocked traffic in Luqa, while at the nearby airport, two small aircraft overturned by a sudden whirlwind.

Police have since warned drivers to exercise extreme caution and stay indoors if possible.

Stormy weather is expected to continue until the early hours of tomorrow.

Great political planning and environment management where wter and trees are concerned. Somelandscapers wibe happy to replace trees, naturally at a price.
