New 16-year-old voters included in special electoral annex
New voters for local council elections aged 16 and 17, to be included in annex to the electoral register
Malta's youngest, and newest, set of voters will be sectioned off in a special annex to the electoral register, making it easier for parties to know who they have to target.
16-year-olds have been granted the right to vote for the first time ever in local council elections under a pledge by the Labour government to widen electoral suffrage.
But a new legal notice published this week also allows the Electoral Commission to publish a special annex on the electoral register, indicating the registration of voters who are aged 16 and 17 on the election of the 2015 local councils.
Every citizen who is aged over 16 but not 18 after the publication of the last revised local councils' electoral register preceding the date of the 2015 local councils, has the right to vote in local elections.
EU citizens who are not Maltese are also entitled to vote in the local council elections.
