Josef Bugeja has been elected as the new deputy secretary general of the General Workers Union, defeating contender Cory Greenland by just nine votes.
Bugeja is section secretary of government and public entities while Greenland is secretary of the professionals, finances and services section.
In a brief statement, the Labour Party congratulated Bugeja on his election while lauding Greenland's work within the union for the workers' benefit.
In a press conference held later on in the afternoon, Bugeja said he would work to represent all union delegates, including the 49% who voted for Greenland.
On his part, Greenland said he was satisfied with the result obtained and noted that 49% of the delegates had liked his ideas and proposals. Greenland started off the elections with 30% support.
Together with GWU secretary general Tony Zarb, the three pledged to be open to new ideas while ensuring that all delegates will be represented.
