Successful women can inspire further change - PN
Opposition MP Claudette Buttigieg marks women’s day by noting the struggle of women who have not yet reached emancipation.
The struggle of women presently fighting for their rights should not be overlooked, the Nationalist Party MP Claudette Buttigieg said.
In a statement issued to mark International Women's Day, the MP said that apart from celebrating women's achievements in Malta, Europe and the world, "we should not forget women who were and still are denied their basic rights and denied the possibility to fulfil their aspirations."
Buttigieg noted that according to Eurostat data, 40% of young women in EU countries, last year completed post-secondary education, compared to 32% of young men.
"This success is down to the efforts and courage of women who did not give up when faced by the challenges and policies which recognised the potential of women," the MP said, adding that Malta is one of the countries which has acknowledged this.
Underlining the importance of education, Buttigieg said that women who seek a career should find the necessary structures to support them to find jobs and realise their dreams while achieving a proper work-family balance.
Noting the theme of the 2014 Women's Day; "Inspiring Change", the MP added that successful women should act as a catalyst for further change and inspire other women.
