‘Prime minister ignoring unemployment figures’ says PN

The Nationalist Party has urged government to address the problem of increasing unemployment in Malta.

Referring to Eurostat figures published today -which show that during the month of January unemployment increased to 6.9% - the PN has called on government to stop side-stepping the problem the country was facing with regard to unemployment.

The Party said that this was a substantial increase when compared to the 6.3% of unemployed in January 2013.

"These figures only serve to confirm that unemployment is on a constant increase," a PN statement read, pointing out that the European Union levels have remained stable throughout the past four months.

The Nationalist Party said that whilst it was positive that the Commission was envisaging Malta's economy to grow over the coming years, it said that the further increase in unemployment over the month of January was a clear indication that action needed to be taken.

"Joseph Muscat is trying to find every excuse to ignore the needs of the 8,000 persons registering for work," it said.

The PN again urged government to seek consultation from the Opposition and social partners in order to develop a comprehensive strategy to tackle the problem of unemployment.

Ignoring them? Haven't the PN heard of the new Social Services benefit UAT? It is for those who can find work and still receive 65% unemployment assistance for the first year, 45% for the second year & 25% for the third year. This is a win win case for both the government & the individual who wants to have a better life!

As if anybody still bothers to give 5 minutes of his time to the endless PN end of the world declarations. He who cries "wolf, wolf" to many times usually ends up loosing all CREDIBILITY. The EU zone reports a 2.2% in unemployment increase. The EU says ours is just 0.3%. Instead of congrats all round in such a difficult market situation, we get pessimistic declarations. Is this chap for real. Or maybe Simon's world is different to the rest of the EU. Give us a break, Simon.
