Marie Louise Coleiro Preca favourite to be next President

Family minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca is favourite to replace George Abela as Head of State.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's inbsistance on having a woman replace George Abela as President has led to the probable appointment of the popular family minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca as Head of State.

Coleiro Preca and academic Carmen Sammut were among the persons being considered to replace George Abela, whose term comes to an end in April, however it seems that Muscat has decided to appoint the Qormi MP.

With Muscat intent on nominating a politically astute person who holds social justice at heart., Coleiro Preca fits the bill perfectly.

Muscat ruled out nominating a President from the Nationalist camp and seems set on opting for somebody who embraces his political vision.

The loyal Coleiro Preca who in MaltaToday's survey once again emerged as the most popular Labour minister, is renowned for her resolve and her strong social conscience.

Nominating Coleiro Preca would however open up a vacancy in the Cabinet of Ministers, which in turn will lead to an inevitable government reshuffle.

Undoubtedly the presidency is a very prestigious position certainly those who suggested Marie Louise for the post either do not have the labour party at heart. Why waist such a hard working minister to fill the post of president. Labour party please reconsider. Minister Coleiro is unmatchable in the party and her appointment as President will undoubtedly have a very deleterious effect on the party. So be careful. Mistakes can be very costly.

If it looks like a fish and it smells like a fish then it is a fish. Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca will make an excellent President. It is about time that Malta has a decent president that will represent all of the Maltese no matter what party they follow.

Not much of a feminist message this. It certainly doesn't up the stakes on account of women in power. Why is it necessary to remove a hardworking politician from the cabinet a woman to boot, who outstrips most of her colleagues when it comes to implementation, strategy and popularity. I find it rather paradoxical vis a vis Labour's gender balance agenda that Marie Louise is to be sacrificed for tokenism. Really if the message is to have women in positions of power then please leave her where she is not dump her in a ceremonial role that will stifle her political creativity. Why should this cabinet drift back to regressive patriarchal models? Lip service is not what we need to change the appalling under representation of women as decision makers.

Although the Presidency is a very prestigious position and I'm certain that the Hon Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca is most suitable for the post, I think that her appointment to Presidency will deny the people from a very valid Minister that is doing everything she can to help the most vulnerable in our society.
