PN slams government for avoiding discussions on Marsaxlokk tanker
Nationalist Party warns that the storage of gas in Marsaxlokk Bay will ‘endanger’ residents.
The Nationalist Party has critisised the government for its lack of reassurances on the controversial berthing of a huge floating gas storage unit in the middle of Marsaxlokk bay. The tanker will hold up to 140,000 cubic metres of gas.
In a statement issued by the Party, the PN said that government was ‘doing its utmost’ to avoid discussion on the topic. This was despite the fact, the PN said, that government had initially stated the importance of carrying out an Environmental Impact Assessment on the project.
“Once again, it is clear that the government is promising one thing but then does another,” the statement said.
The PN said that during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment and Planning held yesterday, Opposition MPs George Pullicino, Toni Bezzina, Ryan Callus and PN whip David Agius spoke in great detail about the important role the committee played in examining all the studies linked to the power station project.
“This is a national project and the committee should be given full capacity to discuss and scrutinise such projects,” it said.
The PN said that it regarded the government’s behaviour to be part of its plan to ‘cover up’ and ‘misinform’ persons on the details project – a project which the PN said will ‘endanger’ residents of Marsaxlokk and Birżebbuga.
