Enemalta employee suspended as theft investigations continue

11 employees from the national energy corporation have been suspended since the discovery of hacked smart meters

Another Enemalta employee was suspended earlier today as the corporation and the Police are  continuing their investigations into electricity theft through irregular meters.

“The Corporation suspended the employee pending further police investigations. Another ten employees have been suspended since the inquiry started,” a spokesperson for the corporation said.

The latest developments followed further internal inquiries as well as the investigation of information provided by customers who are voluntarily reporting irregularities in their electricity consumption readings.

The government claims over 1,000 smart meters could have been rigged by Enemalta installers in a bribery network. It also says that over 600 cases of electricity theft were never investigated by the corporation under the Nationalist administration.

“The corporation and the Police are carefully looking into each case to ensure that the irregularities are immediately stopped and that the stolen electricity and related penalties are paid for. Enemalta is also analysing the irregularities to identify and implement any measures required to prevent further similar losses,” the corporation said.

Customers who are aware of any irregularity in their consumption readings have until Monday, 7 April to voluntarily regularise their position and avoid further consequences. Customers who would like to take this option can contact Enemalta on 8007 2245 or [email protected].

“After this deadline, Enemalta will be employing all necessary measures to take action against customers who would have chosen not to rectify their irregularities,” the corporation said.
