Transport Malta received over 12,000 emission alerts in 2013
Transport Malta received 12,529 'alerts' on excessive emissions from vehicles in 2013, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi says
Over 12,000 vehicles were reported over excessive emissions in 2013, transport minister Joe Mizzi said today.
In reply to a parliamentary question, Mizzi said that out of the 12,529 sms alerts received by Transport Malta, only 250 vehicles were tested by the authority.
He explained that three sms reports, from three separate phones, on the same vehicle must be submitted before a car is tested.
Out of the 250 cars tested, 21 vehicles did not reach the stipulated emission levels.
Mizzi said that once three separate reports on one singular vehicle are received in a three-month period, the car owner is notified by post to have his car tested.
If the car does not reach the set criteria, a fine is issued and the same process is repeated until the vehicle’s emission levels are within limit.
If motorists fail to take their vehicle to Transport Malta after two notifications, their car license would not be eligible for renewal before the vehicle is tested and proven roadworthy.
Vehicles emitting excessive emissions can be reported by sending an SMS to 5061 1899.
