Italian President hails Guido de Marco, 'a Statesman, loved and respected beyond Malta'

The President of the Republic of Italy Giorgio Napolitano has paid tribute to deceased former President Guido de Marco and defined him as a “great Statesman who was loved and respected beyond the Maltese shores.”

In a message sent to President George Abela’s Palace in Valletta, Giorgi Napolitano expressed the Italian nation’s sadness at the demise of Guido de Marco.

“Guido de Marco, an architect behind Malta’s membership within the European Union,  was an international Statesman, and President of the UN General Assembly.”

Giorgio Napolitano concluded: “I salute Guido de Marco, the man who was not only loved and respected by his people, but also beyond the shores of  Malta.”

Napolitano had last met Guido de Marco during his recent State Visit to Mlata last June.
