Minute-by-minute programme for the lying-in State of former President de Marco

The funeral cortege with former President Guido de Marco’s coffin will leave Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 9.00 am, passing through the Birkirkara Bypass and the Santa Venera Bypass.

The cortege will then pass though the following roads in Hamrun: Bishop Priest Mifsud Street, in front of the Immaculate Conception Band Club, in front of the Immaculate Conception Parish, and Manuel Magri Road.

At this point, at 9.30 am, the funeral cortege will stop in front of PN’s Dar Centrali for the last farewell.

The funeral cortege will then pass through Mountbatten Road, Joe Gasan Road, Dun Gorg Preca Road, and finally through National Road in Blata l-Bajda to reach Floriana, passing through Portes Des Bombes, St Anne Road and Great Siege Road.

At this point, the funeral cortege will pass through the following streets in Valletta: Marsamxett Road, St Elmo Road, Merchants Street, in front of the Saint Domenic Parish Church, St Christopher Street, Saint Paul Street, in front of Saint Paul’s Parish Church, Castille Place, Pope Pius V Road, Ordinance Street, Republic Street, in front of the La Vallette band club, in front of the King’s Own band club, in front of the Law Courts and finally at the Palace in St George’s Square.

At 10 am, the funeral cortege carrying De Marco’s coffin should reach St George’s Square, where it will be taken in the entrance of the Palace, where it will remain lying in state.

At 10.50 am, President George Abela will be paying his last respects to former President de Marco.

From 11 am onwards, the public will be able to pay its last respects to the deceased President.

At 11.15 am, acting Prime Minister Tonio Borg will be paying his last respects to the deceased President.

De Marco will be lying in state tomorrow from 11am till 7pm, on Sunday 15 August 2010 between 9am and 1pm and between 4am and 7pm, and on Monday 16 August 2010 from 9amtill noon.

On Monday at 11 am, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who had to cut short his private visit abroad, will pay his final respects to de Marco.

In the Palace there will also be a book of condolences which the public will be able to sign.

Traffic arrangements

Transport Malta (TM) has announced that due to former President Emeritus Guido de Marco’s state funeral, no parking would be permitted along the following roads in Valletta between 5am and 11am tomorrow: Merchants Street, Saint Christopher Street, Castille Place, Pope Pius V, Cavalier Street, Ordinance Street, and St Paul’s Street, which would be used exclusively by the funeral cortege in the direction towards Castille Place.
