Labour leader Joseph Muscat today welcomed a Chinese delegation led by the Vice-Minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee Yu Hongjun.

He said the “excellent bilateral relations” between Malta and China led to the two countries achieving “important” results, such as the recent energy deal which saw a Chinese company invest €320 million in Enemalta.

Muscat said that the excellent relations would lead to “economic growth, job creation and stronger commercial ties.”

Hongjun, who was accompanied by the Chinese ambassador to Malta, Cai Jinbiao underlined Malta’s strategic role in being a bridge between the west and the east and stressed that the two countries’ relationship remained strong “in spite of the complicated international situation.”

He also augured that the two countries strengthen their ties, especially in the energy and economic sectors.

The Chinese delegation also met Opposition leader Simon Busuttil at the PN's headquarters.
