Government recruiting foreign nurses to alleviate shortage in public health sector

Pakistani and other foreign nationals will be alleviating the nursing shortage and are expected to be recruited by government to work in the public health sector in the coming weeks.

In a statement, the Health Ministry explained that 50 Maltese nurses who have just completed their course have applied and have been informed that they are to start work on Monday, August 23.

Out of 250 foreign applicants, 46 are Pakistani nationals, and many have been temporary registered with the Malta Council of Nurses while their qualifications are being tallied with the national requirements.

While the Health Ministry is also waiting for the Police to complete the screening process and issue working visas to those foreign nurses selected, Health Minister Joe Cassar has expressed his satisfaction that solutions are being found to counter the nursing shortage in Malta.

He augured that recruiting agencies continue to offer Malta as a work destination for nurses where they are required.

I have nothing against the recrutment of foreign nurses for our hospitals, but why do we have a numerus classus in the universaty regarding nurses courses or degrees? 2/ Will these nurses have the expected certificates endorsed by their respectve Health Ministeries be they Pakistani,Bulgarian ,Eskimo or whatever, let us bear in mind that certificates can be forged, let us not forget what happened in Gozo, also it must be stressed that these foreign nurses must be conversant in the english language and subsequently be given a course in maltese( and not a 5 day crash course ) we h ave still old folks we can only converse in maltese, because what is the use of having a foriegn nurse when you have to delegate a maltese one to translate ,an administraion of a mistaken pill or injection can be fatal ,we dealing with human beings and not broken down machinery which can be replaced.3/ Are this nurses being recruited directly by the Ministry of Health or is some local "recruitment agency"being used against a 4% commision.Locally it is now commisions galore,a situation of scratch my back and I scratch yours.
