PN motion to impeach Sliema mayor hamstrung by missing signature: 'PN councillor is on my side' - Nikki Dimech
A motion of no-confidence by PN councillors against Sliema mayor Nikki Dimech may not pass, as it falls one crucial signature short.
Updated at 12:37pm with PN statement.
After Nikki Dimech’s resignation from the PN yesterday afternoon, councillor Cyrus Engerer yesterday evening presented a motion of no-confidence signed by all Nationalist councillors to impeach Dimech and elect deputy mayor Joanna Gonzi in his stead.
But the motion does not bear the signature of PN councillor Patrick Pace, who is currently away in Russia on vacation.
Sources said that when the matter was raised in council, Engerer said that although the motion does not have Pace’s signature, the absent councillor “had acknowledged the motion” even though he had not signed it.
But Nikki Dimech has told MaltaToday that the motion of no confidence will not be backed by Pace. “Patrick Pace is definitely on my side,” he said.
This would mean the motion is only supported by five PN councillors. Former PN councillor Sandra Camilleri signed the motion in the now infamous ‘Lady Di meeting’, but said she won’t support it after being coerced by PN secretary-general Paul Borg Oivier.
That would leave the five PN councillors handicapped in their bid to remove Dimech, who is until now the first independent mayor of Sliema, while Camilleri stays on as an independent councillor.
Labour has three councillors, who can be expected not to support any move by the PN to reconfigure itself inside the traditional stronghold.
Dimech yesterday presented his formal letter of resignation to the PN after he was ‘expelled’ from the Nationalist Party. In a statement the PN said that Dimech was informed his position was “untenable” and a resignation was expected.
According to earlier MaltaToday reports, Dimech was expected to be charged over bribery after filing an admission of guilt to Police Inspector Angelo Gafà of the Economic Crimes Unit. During interrogation, 31 year-old Dimech reportedly admitted he asked a council contractor for commission, but he claimed with MaltaToday that he signed the admission “under duress”.
Sandra Camilleri will be resigning after PN secretary-general Borg Olivier coerced the PN councillor into signing a declaration “against her will” to oust Nikki Dimech as Sliema mayor and nominate Johanna Gonzi instead.
In a statement issued yesterday, the PN said that when someone admits to asking for a commission on tender awards, the party does not consider them fit for office. “That’s why the PN expelled Nikki Dimech,” the party said.
The PN added that the day after he admitted to police to bribery accusations, Dimech did not turn up for a meeting with secretary-general Paul Borg Olivier and refused to respond to phone calls and emails. “The PN acted consistently with its values of honesty, justice and correctness.”
Borg Olivier and assistant secretary-general Jean Pierre Debono denied having coerce Camilleri into signing an impeachment motion against Dimech.
