Who is at the helm of the Church?
Seven years after Paul Cremona was ordained Archbishop, is the church in Malta in a better state?
Archbishop Paul Cremona was ordained Archbishop in January 2007 and the faithful received his ascent as a breath of fresh air in a church seen by many as being out-of-synch with society and lacking the necessary communication skills.
However, since Cremona took over the leadership of the Church, the faithful began to note that very little, if any, progress was being made.
Sunday newspaper Illum spoke to three columnists who concurred that the Church under Cremona is rudderless.
Lawyer and television presenter Frank Psaila said “I’m not sure whether I am right in saying the church is led by Paul Cremona, because sincerely speaking I do not know who is leading the church?”
On his part, television and radio presenter Ivan Bartolo said that although Cremona is widely respected, the Archbishop’s team “have led the church into a series of fiascos.”
On slightly more positive note, lecturer and media expert Carmen Sammut said that the church “has a lot of skeletons in the closet” and still coming to terms with a crumbling hegemony.
However, Cremona is leading with “sensibility and profound spirituality and this should offer inspiration in a world desperately seeking authenticity.”
