Two suspects apprehended after robbery
Rapid Intervention Unit found two men with bag full of stolen objects from Mellieħa houses
Two men were arrested by the police shortly after robbing premises in Mellieħa. The robbers were allegedly planning more break-ins in the area but were promptly stopped and arrested by members of the Rapid Intervention Unit.
Residents from Mellieħa were full of praise for the police’s timely intervention. According to one of the residents, the arrests were made shortly before noon after the two men acted suspiciously.
Police sources confirmed that a call was made raising the alarm of “suspicious-looking men” in Triq il-Qortin. Two units from the RIU arrived just a few minutes later and apprehended the men who were carrying a bag full of stolen goods.
One of the thieves was arrested in Triq L. Newton but a second tried to escape, but he was captured too. Police found jewellery and other valuables among the stolen goods. Other objects, such as a large screwdriver was also found in a field, allegedly after one of the robbers threw them away when he saw the police.
First two RIU units that arrived on the scene, led by PS Juan Mula Debono together with PC Roderick Vassallo, PC Garreth D'Amato, PC Matthew Vella and PC William Galea, made a search and in few minutes they found a 34 yeard old man and later a 44 yeard old, both known to the police.
Inspector Antoine Cilia from the RIU was on scene and together with CID Inspector Arthur Mercieca started investigating the robberies. Later on District Police, led by Inspector Maurice Curmi, arrived on the spot. The Police had a hard time trying to find out which residences were broken into.
