10,035 EU nationals working in Malta

Majority of EU nationals working in Malta reside in St Paul’s Bay

A total of 10,035 EU nationals were working in Malta as at end of December 2013, according to Employment Minister Evarist Bartolo.

The information was tabled in parliament following a request made by Nationalist MP Censu Galea.

According to the information, the majority of EU nationals working in Malta come from the United Kingdom (2,074) followed by Italy (1,668) and Bulgaria (859).

These are followed by Hungary (645), Spain (593), Sweden (564), Romania (522), Germany (513) and Poland (316).

The rest come from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia.

There were only two EU nationals from Luxembourg who worked in Malta.

The same information reveals that the majority of these expats, 1,631, lived in St Paul’s Bay, followed by Sliema (1,574) and St Julian’s (1,281). Only four lived in Imtarfa.

Other popular localities included Gzira, Msida, Mellieha, Swieqi, Marsaskala, Birkirkara and Birzebbugia.

The absolute majority lived in Malta (9,686) while 349 resided in Gozo, with the majority, 50, chose iz-Zebbug as their place of residence.
